There can be a lot of confusion as to what it actually means to soften water. How does water softening work? Why is softened water better than hard water? Hopefully, this article will help you answer some of those questions.

The first question is – how, exactly do you soften water? Unlike water filters – water softeners use “salts” which are actually balls of resin with sodium ions on the outside. These sodium ions create molecular bonds with dissolved materials in your water, such as calcium, magnesium, and iron. As hard water passes through the water softener, the materials in the water bond with the sodium resin while the water passes through, removing all of those foreign materials from your water.

Next, how is softener water better than hard water? There are a couple of immediate benefits you’ll notice:

reduction in soapy residue on clothes and skin

shinier and cleaner hair

cleaner and brighter clothes

less soap scum and scaling

reduction in water heating bills

reduction in expenses on soap, detergent, etc…(softened water requires less to be effective)

Winnipeggers are holding their noses yet again to fend off the distinctive musty smell and taste that often plague the city's tap water in the summer.

An article from last summer at cbc.ca outlines some common problems Winnipeg residenta have with their drinking water.

Winnipeggers are holding their noses yet again to fend off the distinctive musty smell and taste that often plague the city’s tap water in the summer.

Winnipeg’s water has an odd taste for a few weeks almost every year due to seasonal algae growth in Shoal Lake, a 227-square-kilometre lake on the Manitoba-Ontario border that provides Winnipeg’s drinking water.

Despite its unpleasant taste and smell, Winnipeg tap water is still safe to drink, says Winnipeg Regional Health Authority’s medical officer of health. Tap water is routinely tested during the summer season for substances produced by algae.

If you, like many consumers, are interested in improving the quality of the water in your home, you should contact your local Culligan Man!
